Women's State Pensions

Women's State Pensions

The government’s changes to the State Pension age were intended to equalise the age of retirement for men and women. I believe that this remains the right goal to aim for, since it is important that our State Pension system does not discriminate on the grounds of gender. However, I also understand the significant impact that the changes have had on women who had until recently been expecting to retire at 60.

It is vital that, as we transition to an equalised state pension age, we make sure that we do not unduly damage the life plans and finances of those caught up in the process. I recognise that many women who had been intending to retire at 60 have felt that the changes have been too sudden and that their retirement and financial plans have been disrupted.

I believe that we can deliver a fairer outcome for women impacted by the changes. As a result, I am campaigning for new measures in order to reduce the impact on women. I have written to the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions to highlight the concerns of local women and to ask that stronger measures are taken to support those who have found themselves in this position.

I am aware that a judicial review is currently underway in relation to this matter. Whilst I cannot comment on the ongoing legal process, I will be following the outcome closely.
