TTIP

Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP)

The TTIP is a free trade deal being negotiated between the United States and the European Union. The aim is to lower trade barriers and thereby boost growth, create more jobs and lower prices. I want us to have an open, trading economy to secure our future. It is not a new idea. The UK has over 90 similar agreements in place and we must have a trade deal with the US. It is the biggest economy in the world.

Removing trade barriers with the US across a wide range of economic sectors will make it easier for the EU and US to trade in goods and services, giving a much-needed boost to businesses that sell those goods and services overseas. Research suggests the TTIP could boost the UK economy by up to £100 billion over the next 10 years.

The TTIP does not require us, the US or any other country to open up their national health systems to private providers.  It will not affect how public services are paid for. Decisions about NHS care will remain in the hands of local doctors.  We want patients to be able to benefit from the very latest diagnostic devices and drugs. The US is a world leader in medical technologies and the TTIP will help patients get access to those treatments on the NHS faster.
