This afternoon I was delighted to visit Governor Terry Witton at HMP Channings Wood within the constituency. As The Prisons and Courts Bill is currently going through Parliament, I thought this would be an ideal time to look at the challenges facing the management and staff day to day.
I was taken on a tour of the woodwork shop where prisoners are employed to build wardrobes, desk pedestals and naval boxes. I also had the chance to see the newly installed laundry, as well as the opportunity to look inside a cell to get an idea of the living accommodation for prisoners.
Mr Witton and his team are extremely hard working and dedicated, and their commitment to ensuring a safe and secure environment for staff and prisoners was evident.
