I have taken real pride and delight over the last 12 months in seeing the fantastic local news on the unemployment rate. In October unemployment in the Newton Abbot constituency fell to 1.3%, giving us one of the best figures in the whole of the U.K.
Over the last year we have seen the local unemployment rate fall by over 50%. I want to thank our local Jobcentre Plus office in Newton Abbot. I have met the staff there, and they do a fantastic job in helping the people of Teignbridge to find jobs or suitable training. Public service at its very best!
I meet regularly with local businesses large and small, either through business forums or on an individual basis. They all tell me that they are feeling increasingly confident about their prospects, and that their order books are looking good. I am delighted to see that their increased confidence is now translating into hiring new staff and creating new jobs. I am passionate about ensuring that everyone in Teignbridge –individuals, families and businesses alike – benefit from the rising tide of prosperity.
I am also the first to say that there is no room for complacency, and I meet regularly with Government ministers including the Chancellor to suggest new ways to boost the economy. This welcome fall in local unemployment is another step in the right direction, but there is yet more to do!
