“I am absolutely delighted the government has decided to give the go ahead to the South Devon Link Road. This is something I have campaigned for since being elected to Parliament and this announcement today represents a considerable investment in both my constituency and South Devon.
“The South Devon Link Road is a scheme that will generate £9 for our local economy for every £1 invested in it and approximately 8,000 jobs across Devon will be created as a result of the road being built. It will help kick-start the local economies in Newton Abbot and Torbay and help both attract much needed investment. It will reduce congestion in my constituency considerably as the 35,000 vehicles currently snarling up lanes in and around Kingskerswell will be diverted onto a road network suitable for such volumes of traffic. Journey times will fall for business, tourists and commuters looking to travel between Newton Abbot and Torbay, public transport will become more reliable and the response times of our emergency services will fall. The air quality in Kingskerswell is also set to dramatically improve.
“It is important that the project now moves forward swiftly, but also sensitively. I will work alongside everybody affected by the building of the South Devon Link Road to ensure that they are treated fairly and receive any compensation they are entitled to. This decision is however a major and welcome boost for the economy of South Devon and I would like to thank Sarah Wollaston, Adrian Sanders and Devon County Council in particular for the work they have done to get us to this stage.”
