Anne Marie Morris adds her voice to calls for a new pedestrian crossing near Newton Abbot bus terminal.
Volunteers running the Shopmobility Centre in Newton Abbot alerted Anne Marie to the number of near misses between shoppers using scooters and passing buses, while some scooters have toppled over trying to cross the busy Sherborne Road. Hopes had been raised in 2007 that a new crossing, in between the nearby multi storey car park and the undercover market would be installed. However, moves to install the new crossing appear no closer to coming to fruition.
Anne Marie insists that elderly and disabled shoppers are being put at risk because of a lack of a crossing, and called on Devon County Council to treat the plans as a matter of urgency.
She said:
"It is inexcusable to allow our most vulnerable citizens to 'run the gauntlet' risking their lives just to cross the road, a safe crossing is not an 'optional extra' but a basic requirement of any civilised society."
