Fuel Duty

Thank you for contacting me about the fuel prices.

As you may be aware, a continuation of the freeze on fuel duty was promised during the election campaign. I welcome the fact that the decision to freeze fuel duty for ten consecutive years has saved the average driver over £1,000. I am confident that we can build on this legacy, so that ordinary hardworking people can keep more of their money.

I have been calling on the Treasury to cut fuel duty in light of the cost of living squeeze that families are facing at the moment, and I was delighted to see confirmation in the Chancellor's Spring Statement that fuel duty will be cut by 5pc with immediate effect. This will help families who rely on their cars to get to work and to drive their children to school, and will be a particular boost for rural areas like ours. I am also hopeful that the duty cut will cut costs for business and that this will have the potential to ease upward pressure on prices for many goods and services across the economy.

Thank you again for taking the time to write to me.
