Arrival Duty-Free Shops

Thank you for contacting me about the new rules surrounding duty- and tax-free goods.

Now that we have left the European Union, the UK has the freedom to create new rules concerning various policy areas, including goods carried across borders. I welcome that the Government has been able to take advantage of the opportunity provided by this new relationship with the EU.

After the Spring Budget in 2020, the Government published a consultation regarding a potential new approach to goods carried across borders. Ministers met with stakeholders and welcomed a wide range of views and evidence. Informed by this feedback, the Government made a decision concerning increasing personal allowances which it believes is beneficial to passengers arriving from both EU and non-EU countries.

While I am currently unaware of any plans to introduce Duty-Free Arrival stores, I have assured my colleagues in the Treasury are aware of your views on this issue.

Thank you again for taking the time to contact me.
