Alleged Royal Corruption

Thank you for contacting me about the campaign led by the pressure group, Republic, on abolishing the monarchy following allegations of privileged access.

I have the utmost respect for HM The Queen and the Royal Family. The Queen has dedicated her life to the service of the United Kingdom and the 16 realms of which she acts as Head of State. Her commitment has been unwavering.

Working members of the Royal Family assist The Queen in carrying out her duties. These include official state responsibilities in the UK and overseas. Members of the Royal Family also support the public and charitable sector and around 3,000 organisations have a member of the Royal Family as president or patron.

The Duke of York stepped back from public duties in November 2019. He previously undertook a wide range of public work with a focus on business and the economy.

Prince Michael of Kent receives no public money and earns his own living running a consultancy company. He undertakes a range of engagements for the not-for-profit sector funded by his own household. He represents The Queen at certain engagements.]

The Chief Executive of The Prince’s Foundation, Michael Fawcett, has stepped down while an investigation is carried out. I understand that the Prince of Wales had no knowledge of the alleged offer of honours and citizenship and that he fully supports the investigation being carried out.

The Sovereign plays an important constitutional role and The Queen and the Royal Family have a special place in the hearts of the British people. I do not agree with your view that the monarchy should be abolished.

Thank you again for taking the time to contact me.
