A real chance to vote for change
5th May 2010
So, tomorrow we will go to the polls in what will be the most important election for a generation. We have a real prospect of winning the new seat in which you live - Newton Abbot.
In order for David Cameron to have a working majority the Conservatives must win this seat and rid ourselves of Gordon Brown and the Labour Government. The race here promises to be very tight and every vote will count.
This seat is one that we must win in order to form a majority and change the government. Votes for other parties only risk the instability of a hung parliament and five more years of Gordon Brown. When you’re in that polling booth, please remember what this election means for you in Teignbridge. With a Conservative majority I can deliver real change – a hung parliament will just mean more of the same.
Here’s the pledge I’m making to you:
- I will be open, honest, transparent, and be accessible to all. I will work hard both in the constituency and at Westminster to bring the change we need – in water rates, business rates, utility bills and pension entitlements.
- I will fight to establish fairer school funding. I will work to ensure that Devon no longer finds itself at the bottom of the spending league tables. I will work with the local education community and local businesses to establish a technical college and more local apprenticeships.
- I will fight for more services in our community hospitals. Dawlish, Teignmouth and Newton Abbot hospitals offer that opportunity. I will champion better dementia care in partnership with our local health professionals and care homes.
- I will fight to regenerate our local economy. Building the bypass, re-invigorating tourism, fishing, farming and manufacturing will bring jobs. I will also fight for affordable housing – but in the right place, and to keep local shops, post offices, libraries and pubs.
- Pensioners will see a fair pension in line with earnings. The winter fuel allowance and other benefits will be safeguarded, including disability living allowance. We will help pensioners insulate their homes and introduce a freezing of council tax.
Hustings
Tonight I’m taking part in two sets of hustings organised by Churches Together. The first starts at 6pm at Dawlish Community College and the second is in the main hall at the Avenue Church, Newton Abbot at 8pm. They should be a great climax to the campaign and I’d love to see you there.
Yours
