Anne Marie Morris: ‘Green Deal’ will help cut utility bills

8th December 2009

Anne Marie Morris has given her backing to Conservative plans to help Teignbridge households protect the environment and save money.

The ‘Green Deal’, unveiled by the Conservatives as the world’s leaders meet in Copenhagen, will mean every household will have the right to have home energy efficiency work of up to £6,500, which could see £30 a month knocked off a typical home’s fuel bills.

Homes will be refitted by landlords, charities and utility companies at no cost to the householder – with the cost being recouped through reduced bills. It is estimated that 9.5 million tonnes of carbon emissions will be avoided by the ‘Green Deal’.

Anne Marie said: “The Green Deal of insulating people’s homes for no upfront cost and rewarding people for recycling will not only protect the environment, but also help families and pensioners who are struggling to make ends meet.

“I am glad that real action to keep bills down and reverse climate change is being proposed. Many people in Teignbridge suffer as a result of high utility bills and we can combat the problem by reducing the cost of heating bills thereby saving people money and the environment all at once.

“If we are to meet our targets of an 80 percent reduction in CO2 by 2050, we need to start tackling the problem of energy inefficiency in our existing housing stock.”
